Common mistakes in English 37

1- For what  did he buy a new car?

Danger!

Parece perfeito… em português!!!

Em inglês, a estrutura fica assim:

What did he buy a new car for?

O mesmo vale para:

Wrong: With who did she go?

Right: Who did she go with?

2- I want that him to do the report today.

A little confusing…

You probably mean: I want him to do the report today.

Veja a estrutura:

Verbos que dão a ideia de pedir, dizer, permitir (ask, expect, force, teach, tell, warn) ou verbos que dão a ideia de querer ou precisar (want, would like, prefer, need).

(want)

+

Objeto: pronome objetivo ou nome (me, his, her, you, us, them, Mark, Sue, Kevin, etc).

(him)

+

TO + verbo

(to finish)

3- He doesn't support that actress. Whenever she is on TV, he changes channels.

False friends, here I am!!! Watch out!

Veja a definição:

Support: provide financial or emotional support, help.

Acho que não deve ser o caso…Ele não deve é gostar da atriz mesmo!!!

Assim:

He can't stand that actress. Whenever she is on TV, he changes channels.
